Court Transparency
New 2025

Transparency in Family Courts

A major pilot scheme is expanding in 2025, allowing accredited journalists and legal bloggers to report on what happens in family courts. This aims to increase trust and understanding of the system while still strictly protecting the anonymity of families and children.

What this means for you: If you are going to court, reporters might be present. However, strict rules prevent them from identifying you or your children. The goal is to shine a light on how decisions are made, not to expose private family matters.

Mediation

Mediation Voucher Scheme

Did you know the government is still running a scheme to help families resolve disputes outside of court? You could be eligible for a voucher worth up to £500 towards the cost of mediation for children matters.

Why it matters: Mediation is often faster and less stressful than court. This voucher is not means-tested, meaning you don't need to be on low income to qualify, provided the dispute involves a child. Ask us how we can help you access this.

Suspicious Salmon

The Salmon Act 1986

Still Valid

Believe it or not, under Section 32 of the Salmon Act 1986, it is technically illegal to "handle a salmon in suspicious circumstances".

Beer

Licensing Act 1872

Strictly Speaking...

It is actually an offence to be drunk in a pub. Section 12 states that "every person found drunk... on any licensed premises, shall be liable to a penalty".

Metropolitan Police Act 1839

London Law

In London, it is illegal to beat or shake any carpet, rug, or mat (except doormats) in the street after 8:00 AM.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a McKenzie Friend?

expand_more
A McKenzie Friend is someone who assists a "Litigant in Person" (someone representing themselves) in court. We can sit with you, take notes, help organize your documents, and quietly give you advice. However, we strictly cannot sign documents on your behalf or address the court directly unless given specific permission by the judge.

Are you Solicitors?

expand_more
No, we are not solicitors. We are a network of qualified Legal Executives and Paralegals. This allows us to offer legal support at a fraction of the cost of a High Street solicitor firm. We help you represent yourself effectively.

What does "Fixed Fee Divorce" include?

expand_more
Our £250 Fixed Fee service covers the preparation of your divorce application for uncontested cases. This fee pays for our time and expertise to manage the paperwork. It does not include the court's mandatory fee (currently £550), which must be paid directly to the court unless you qualify for fee remission.

Where are you located?

expand_more
We are based in the Bournemouth & Poole area. We offer home visits within an 8-mile radius. For clients further afield, we can usually provide support via phone, email, and video calls, though travel costs (45p/mile + £15/hr) apply for in-person court attendance outside this area.
